I want to give a big shout out to Justin Witt’s Rio Pico Trout Bum program. Recently, my fishing buddy, Dr. Chris Williams, and I had the pleasure of our first trip to Argentina’s Patagonia region. We fished beautiful lakes and streams with scenic views of the eastern slopes of the rugged, snow-capped Andes Mountains and stayed in the remote, quaint village of Rio Pico. Quite simply, it was nothing short of a fantastic time. The fishing was excellent for brook, rainbow and brown trout, many of them large (up to 29”, but 30”-plus fish are there, too).

Our guide (Alfredo aka “Alfie”) was excellent in every way possible (genial, fun, attentive, knowledgeable), including providing us with serenades in the evening as he is also an excellent musician! While at the lodge, we met several other guides all of whom were also genial and knowledgeable. The lodging and food were great, managed by the sweet and attentive Karina. While not fancy or “up-scale”, the experience more than met my personal desire for an immersive fishing experience rather than a fancy lodge experience.Through it all Justin was a gracious host and extremely helpful in planning not only this specific experience but also with other aspects of getting around in Patagonia. As an inveterate, life-long trout bum (and retired trout biologist), this program exceeded all my expectations. I cannot recommend the experience higher and look forward to doing it again next year.
