Roosters, Pelagics & a Fishery That Refuses to Sit Still

Baja has been on the fly-fishing map for a long time, and for good reason. It combines straightforward travel, a spectacular desert-meets-ocean setting, comfortable accommodations, and a fishery diverse enough that even anglers who arrive completely fixated on one species tend to go home talking about three or four others.

Angling Baja operates from La Ventana, a small community on the Sea of Cortez about an hour south of La Paz. Cerralvo Island sits just offshore, deep water lies surprisingly close to the beach, and throughout the year an almost ridiculous variety of inshore and pelagic species move through the area. The program is centered around fly fishing, but there is plenty of flexibility to mix in conventional tackle, jigging or other methods when conditions—or the fish—suggest a change of plans.

Guests fish from pangas, stay at a comfortable beachfront hotel, eat at the property, and can be back by early afternoon with enough daylight left to sit by the pool, wander the beach or, for those of us incapable of stopping, go fishing again. The lodge property has direct beach access, a pool, hot tub, restaurant and bar, and views across the Sea of Cortez toward Cerralvo Island.

This is also one of the better Hemispheres programs for couples or mixed angling/non-angling groups. Diving, snorkeling, whale watching, hiking, mountain biking and seasonal wildlife excursions can all be arranged locally, which means nobody necessarily has to spend the week wondering why he or she agreed to follow a fisherman to Mexico.

For anglers wanting a saltwater trip with serious fishing but considerably less logistical drama than some of our more remote destinations, La Ventana is the place to be.

Fishing

Roosterfish are the headliner here, one of those special species of fish that have an uncanny ability to make otherwise competent fly anglers look slightly foolish. Most of the fishing is to sighted fish - the idea is to locate them, get them moving if necessary, make the cast and then try not to screw up everything that happens next. That final part matters. Roosters are fast, aggressive and frustratingly good at changing direction just when everything appears to be coming together.

The inshore fishery can also produce jack crevalle, snapper, grouper, yellowtail, pompano, triggerfish, ladyfish and other species, depending upon the season. Milkfish occasionally enter the equation as well, and anybody who has ever hooked one will understand why a fish that eats plankton can somehow turn into a high speed bulldozer if you can hook it.

Offshore, the possibilities expand considerably. Dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and several species of marlin all move through the Sea of Cortez seasonally.

One of the advantages of La Ventana is how quickly the bottom drops away, allowing anglers to encounter true pelagic species without spending half the day running to get offshore. Depending upon conditions, you can dedicate the entire day to bluewater fishing or mix it into an otherwise inshore program.

Fishing is done from 22-foot pangas set up specifically with fly anglers in mind. Boats have fore and aft casting areas, non-slip decks, rod storage and grab rails, with two anglers normally sharing each boat. The captains know the local water well and adjust the fishing plan daily according to bait, conditions and what was seen the previous day.

For fly anglers, a ten-weight is the standard workhorse and a twelve-weight handles the heavier stuff. Intermediate clear-tip lines are useful for roosterfish and most general baitfish presentations, while sinking lines become important for tuna and deeper-water fishing. Anglers specifically trying for very large tuna, sharks or blue marlin may want something heavier still, though once you start talking about fourteen-weights we are admittedly drifting into a fairly specialized form of entertainment.

Catch-and-release is mandatory for the Roosters, sailfish, and Marlin, but tuna, wahoo, snapper and dorado can be kept for the table, and the hotel kitchen can prepare your catch for dinner.

Accommodations

Angling Baja uses a beachfront hotel in La Ventana, directly on the Sea of Cortez and facing Cerralvo Island. And unlike some fishing accommodations where the primary design objective appears to have been “bed plus roof,” this is a genuinely nice place to spend a week.

The property includes a swimming pool, hot tub, hammocks, fire-pit lounge, restaurant and beach bar, along with plenty of outdoor space overlooking the water. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available as well, which are useful either for relaxing or for turning what would otherwise have been an afternoon off into yet another fishing adventure.

There are both individual rooms and larger shared houses. The houses generally contain two bedrooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning, ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, refrigerators, purified water and in-room safes. Some also have kitchenettes.

Individual rooms have queen or king beds, private bathrooms and the same basic amenities, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi, refrigerators, coffee makers, purified water and safes. Some rooms also include private pools.

Laundry, housekeeping and spa services are available at additional cost.

The property works particularly well for couples because a non-angling guest has plenty to do without ever leaving La Ventana. Depending upon the season, available activities can include snorkeling, diving, whale watching, swimming with mobula rays, whale-shark excursions, hiking and mountain biking.

Cuisine

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the standard program. Fishing mornings begin early, with breakfast generally served around 5:00 a.m. Expect coffee, tea, eggs, fruit, yogurt, toast and enough food to get you through the first half of the fishing day. Timing can shift slightly depending upon whether the guides need to collect bait or whether the boats are departing directly from the beach.

Lunch goes out on the panga and can be eaten whenever everyone finally agrees to stop fishing long enough to eat it. The boat cooler is also stocked with water, soft drinks and beer all as part of the package.

Dinner is served back at the hotel restaurant, which is used exclusively by the fishing groups during the season.

The menu naturally leans toward Mexican and coastal cooking, with fresh seafood featuring prominently. If you decide to keep a tuna, dorado, wahoo or snapper during the day, the kitchen can prepare it for dinner—which is generally a pretty good argument for knowing exactly where your fish came from.

Alcohol ordered separately at the hotel or restaurant is not included in the package.

Travel Details

La Ventana is located on the eastern side of Baja California Sur, with two practical airport options.

La Paz International Airport (LAP) is the closest. The drive from the airport to the hotel takes approximately one hour.

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) has considerably more international service but is farther away, with ground transfers generally taking somewhere between about two hours and twenty minutes to three hours. So the basic choice is fairly simple: better flight schedules into Los Cabos, or considerably less time sitting in a van from La Paz.

Airport transportation is included in the current package structure. Private vans are used for transfers, and groups arriving from different locations should coordinate flight schedules as closely as possible so everybody reaches the same airport at roughly the same time.

Arrival day is intentionally uncomplicated. Guests are picked up at the airport, transferred to the hotel and checked in. Later, the guides meet with anglers to go through tackle, leaders, flies and plans for the first fishing day. And yes, if you arrive early enough and simply cannot help yourself, there is beach fishing directly in front of the hotel.

Finally, anglers should pay attention to airline and customs rules regarding fishing equipment. The brochure currently advises that hooks, pliers, leader material and fly-tying tools travel in checked baggage, and regulations regarding rods can vary depending upon airline and direction of travel. Check the current rules before departure rather than trying to debate fishing-tackle policy with airport security at five in the morning.

Important Notes for Anglers

• Most captains speak limited English. Anglers should be comfortable tying their own knots and leaders, although fly selection is usually just a matter of handing your box to the guide.
