Fishing

     The Spanish Pyrenees are home to an impressive range of waters, from small high-elevation streams to larger freestone rivers and remote alpine lakes. The region is best known for its populations of wild zebra trout, an endemic species found only here, along with healthy stocks of brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and barbel in select waters.

Dry-fly fishing is central to the program throughout the season, supported by consistent insect activity and clean water. Nymphing is used selectively, and most fishing is done with floating lines and lighter rods—typically 3- and 4-weights on small streams and 5-weights on larger rivers. All fishing is wade fishing, and access often involves short walks, 4×4 tracks, or quick moves between valleys. 

Guided fishing is generally at a ratio of two anglers per guide, with experienced local guides fluent in English and deeply familiar with the region’s waters.

Accommodations

     The Trout Bum Spanish Pyrenees program operates across two primary areas, Biescas and Graus, allowing access to very different river systems and elevations. Accommodations are chosen to support this flexibility, offering comfortable, well-located bases that make daily movement between waters efficient while also providing distinct options depending on personal travel style.

Biescas Area

The Biescas base is ideal for fishing high mountain streams, alpine valleys, and small rivers in the heart of the Pyrenees. Here, guests may choose between two accommodation styles, both located within easy reach of the water.

The first option is a comfortable, straightforward hotel designed with anglers in mind. Rooms are modern and functional, with private bathrooms and a relaxed atmosphere that works well for early starts and long fishing days.

The hotel includes wellness facilities such as indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and a gym—useful for recovery days or afternoons off the water. Dinners are included as part of the stay, though guests who prefer to explore local restaurants in Biescas may opt out and enjoy the town’s walkable dining options instead.

For those looking for a more elevated stay, the second option in Biescas is Viñas de Larrede, a luxury lodge set beside the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Lárrede and a 16th-century defensive tower. This is a small, refined property with a quiet, intimate feel and expansive views of the surrounding mountains.

Rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, and the atmosphere leans toward calm and understated elegance rather than formality. Meals here reflect traditional northern Spanish cuisine. While clearly more refined, the lodge still functions smoothly within a fishing itinerary, supporting early departures and flexible daily plans.

Both Biescas options work equally well for non-fishing companions. From this base, they can join guided excursions into Ordesa National Park, explore medieval villages such as Aínsa, visit wildlife parks and birdwatching areas, tour Somontano wineries, or spend relaxed afternoons in nearby mountain towns like Panticosa. Activities are easily arranged with private guides and scaled to individual interests.

Graus Area

The second base is in the historic town of Graus, positioned to fish broader foothill rivers and lower-elevation systems. Accommodations here are centered at Palacio del Obispo, a restored 16th-century stone building that once served as a bishop’s residence. Today, it operates as a four-star hotel, blending original architectural elements with modern comfort.

Rooms are private, quiet, and well suited to anglers, offering a calm retreat after full days on the river. The hotel functions much like a lodge: mornings are efficient, guides meet guests on site, and daily plans are adjusted based on conditions rather than fixed schedules. A spa is available for rest afternoons, though it remains secondary to the fishing.

Graus itself adds a different dimension to the stay. The town is walkable and lively, with a variety of tapas bars, restaurants, and cafés just outside the door. While dinner at the hotel can be arranged, many guests enjoy the freedom to explore locally in the evenings. Non-fishing companions benefit from the same cultural access, with nearby historical sites, scenic walks, and winery visits easily incorporated into the stay.

Cuisine

     Food in the Spanish Pyrenees follows the same rhythm as the fishing—unrushed, local, and shaped by where the day leads. Meals are designed to support long hours on the water while still offering a sense of place and culture, whether you’re fishing or exploring the region as a companion.

Biescas – Hotel & Spa

At the standard Biescas hotel, meals are included on a half-board basis. Days begin with a buffet breakfast before departure to the river, followed by either a picnic lunch by the water or lunch taken at the hotel depending on the plan. Dinners are included and typically feature traditional northern Spanish dishes served in a relaxed dining room setting. For guests who prefer to explore Biescas independently in the evenings, the town offers tapas bars, restaurants, and informal options within easy walking distance.

Lunches during fishing days include water and soft drinks, along with a selection of local Somontano wine, beer, or coffee. The approach is practical and generous—designed to sustain a full day rather than interrupt it.

Biescas – Luxury Lodge (Viñas de Larrede)

At Viñas de Larrede, cuisine takes on a more refined but still regionally grounded tone. Breakfasts remain substantial and unhurried, and lunches may be enjoyed riverside or back at the lodge. Dinners reflect a more curated interpretation of traditional Aragonese cooking, served in an intimate setting that emphasizes local ingredients and mountain flavors.

While clearly more elevated in presentation, the experience remains aligned with the fishing schedule. Early departures and flexible returns are fully supported, and meals are integrated smoothly into the daily rhythm rather than formalized events.

Graus – Palacio del Obispo

In Graus, dining is intentionally more flexible. Breakfasts are served at the hotel before departure, and lunches follow the same pattern as in Biescas—either picnic-style along the river or taken at the hotel depending on the day’s plan. Lunches during fishing include beverages and a selection of Somontano wine.

Evenings, however, are left largely open. While dinner at the hotel can be arranged, many guests choose to step directly into Graus’ historic center, where a wide range of tapas bars, traditional restaurants, and casual eateries are within walking distance. This option appeals particularly to couples and mixed groups, allowing each evening to unfold naturally—sometimes long and social, other times quiet and early.

Travel Details

Most guests land in Madrid or Barcelona international airports. 

After that reaching the Spanish Pyrenees is simpler than it first appears. Most trips are routed through Zaragoza, a practical gateway with an international airport and excellent high-speed rail connections to both Barcelona and Madrid. Transfers from Zaragoza to Biescas or Graus are included as part of the program, making it the most straightforward option for arrivals.

Guests arriving elsewhere in Spain can still access the program easily.

Private transfers at additional cost can be arranged from Barcelona or Lleida, both of which work well for travelers already moving through Europe or extending a broader itinerary. These transfers are handled as optional supplements and are typically shared between anglers traveling together. While the drive is longer than from Zaragoza, it offers a gradual transition from coastal or lowland Spain into the Pyrenean landscape.

Rates

     The Spanish Pyrenees program is structured around flexible itineraries, allowing guests to match fishing days, accommodations, and travel plans according to preference. While most anglers choose a full week to take advantage of elevation changes and varied waters, trips can be customized beginning at 2 nights with 1.5 guided fishing days, or extended to any length.

Trips may be arranged from 2 nights / 1.5 guided days up to extended 10-night programs.
