Fishing
The Hemispheres Tarpon Bum program is run out of Holbox, Mexico, one of the best tarpon fisheries on Earth both for huge schools of migratory fish within sight of shore and access to smaller and also plentiful residents back in the mangroves. Whatever you're in the mood for (or whatever your arms are up to the task of) on any given day is available, with the boats pulling up to the beach right in front of the lodge for a pre-dawn departure.

The big guys, migratory tarpon in schools, some of which number in the hundreds of fish, are cruising deep water just offshore.

That's not to say the fish are always deep though; to the contrary they are more often than not on the surface, and the floating line rod is the one we keep in hand with stripping on the deck most days.

While we do generally rig two rods per angler (one with the floating line and one with heavy fast sink tip in case we spot fish down low) more often than not they are on the surface and rolling in sardines. Throw a fly into that crazy dancing mess and hang on, that's pretty much the trick.

And while we're out there, it isn't the least big uncommon for a school of Jacks to come past; anyone who wants to find out just how strong these fish are is welcome to throw a fly (pretty much any fly) into the school and then hold on while the backing to line connection gets tested.

How a fifteen pound fish pulls that hard is a mystery yet to be solved, but they sure are a lot of fun.

It's a whole different ballgame back in the channels, but a really cool ballgame in that the fish take everything from streamers to surface poppers, and there are plenty of them hungry.
These fish range from just a few pounds to sizes that require the same leader set-ups we're using outside to in order keep them out of the mangroves until they come to hand.

Fishing back here can be done from the boat and also on foot, which introduces a whole new dimension to the experience of wrestling these feisty fish.

Accommodations
In addition to the fishery, Rocky found the perfect place to stay. A simple but comfortable waterfront lodge with air conditioning, a pool, and nice clean sheets.
Add in a bar, good fast WiFi, a restaurant, and some beach chairs, and you've got yourself a Tarpon Bum base of operations.

Single or double occupancy rooms are available, and we've yet to have a complaint.

Cuisine
Breakfast is included in the package rate, and is generally taken on the boat between pickup and wherever the first cast is to be made. This is a pre-dawn start program, and with the days as long as they are in July it's already been a full day of fishing by the time we get off the boats in the early afternoon.

Lunch can be taken at Choby's or in town - same for dinner. And luckily there are plenty of options within walking distance and even more a short four-wheeler (the taxis of Holbox) ride away.

By now Rocky is familiar with enough of the catalog of restaurant options that he can get the group where they need to go any time.

Rates
The Tarpon Bum program is one that we run only two weeks of every year - the best two weeks of tarpon fishing out of Holbox. Dates vary slightly and we keep in touch with the guides regarding conditions as the season nears, but for the most part we're looking at the first half of July. And Rocky is there, every year, the whole time. Group size is limited to six rods a week so we're talking only 12 total spaces; get in touch soon to make plans - this one truly is a blast.
